Oscar winners in the back catalogue

Eight weeks in, with 58 puzzles played, seven of the answers so far have won Best Picture, and a few more have Oscars in the smaller categories. Here they are by puzzle number, so you can still go and play them.

Number #0021 won Best Picture, and its lead won Best Actor for it. That was his second Best Actor in a row, after he'd won the year before playing a lawyer dying of AIDS in Philadelphia. In this one he plays a man who keeps ending up at the big moments of twentieth-century American history without ever really meaning to, and the director won as well.

The most recent to do well is number #0047. It won Best Picture and Best Director, the director's first win after a long run of losing, along with two acting awards, one of them a first Best Actor for a lead who spends the film thin and chain-smoking as a real physicist.

Number #0042 won eleven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. Only two other films in history have won that many. It was a three-hour disaster film that plenty of people expected to flop, and it did the opposite.

Number #0037 won Best Picture and Best Actor. The lead plays a reluctant monarch who took the throne when his older brother walked away from it, and the whole performance turns on his fight with a stammer, set in the years before the Second World War.

Number #0056 also took the top two, Best Picture and Best Director, for a film made to look like one long unbroken shot. It follows an actor well past his fame who was once known for playing a superhero, and the Academy does not usually pick anything this unusual.

Two of the older answers won Best Picture decades earlier. Number #0014, from 1976, is a low-budget boxing film written by its own unknown lead, who became a star the moment it came out. Number #0012, from 1965, is a musical set in Austria on the eve of the war, and for a while it was the biggest film in the world.

A few others won in the smaller categories rather than the main ones. Number #0033 and number #0023 both won Best Animated Feature. Number #0029 won Best Original Score and Best Original Song, which is a strong hint on its own if you know your film music.
