Tips for guessing KINO

A KINO puzzle gives you more to work with than it first looks. Before you spend a guess, read what's already on the screen.

Start with the picture. It sharpens as you go, but even the blurry first version tells you something: the rough era and whether it looks filmed or drawn. Bright, bold, slightly unreal colours usually mean animation. If the genre confirms that, you can switch from guessing titles to guessing studios. Pixar or Disney for a film, Nickelodeon for a cartoon series. That alone cuts out most of the catalogue.

Check the flag and the language too. Country of origin and original language are shown on the puzzle, and they rule out a lot. A film in Korean isn't going to be a Hollywood blockbuster, so don't waste a guess on one.

The year is where most people miss a trick. It's a clue by itself, but the useful part happens when you start typing. As soon as you pick a title from the suggestions, its release year appears next to it. So your first guesses don't have to be real attempts. Use them to check years. Take #0031: the puzzle is an American film from 1993. You reach for a big name from that era and try Pulp Fiction. Up comes 1994 next to it, which doesn't match, so it's out and you've lost nothing. You've ruled out a year and narrowed things down, and often that's enough to land the answer on the next go.

That's the main thing. Use your early guesses to gather information rather than guessing blind. The popularity stars tell you how well known the answer is, so a five-star puzzle is something big and probably obvious once you see it. Put that together with the year and you can often work it out before the later clues arrive.

And if it beats you, you still see the answer at the end on the reveal screen, so you learn the film either way. Next time something from that year or that studio turns up, you'll know it straight away.
